The Year 10–13 students of the Te Reo Māori classes had the opportunity to visit Wairewa Marae for a special day of cultural learning and hononga/connection.
The group was warmly welcomed with a pōwhiri, followed by shared kai in the wharekai. Students then shared their mihi and pepeha, showing confidence and respect for the tikanga of the marae. We had the company of four teachers, Whaea Myra and Ms Clare Kelly, our te reo Māori teachers and Mrs Rachel Parkin and Ms Sara Lake who both whakapapa to Wairewa Marae.
A highlight of the visit was hearing from Matua Kenny, who shared stories and helped ākonga make connections to the Wairewa whenua through whakapapa.
The day was a valuable experience that deepened students’ understanding of Te Ao Māori and strengthened their sense of identity and belonging. We are grateful to the Wairewa Marae community for their manaakitanga and for welcoming us so generously.
