Support following Friday 15 March 2019

Dear parents, students, families and staff

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who lost loved ones and those who are struggling in Christchurch.

Some of you may be wondering how best to support your young people at this time. Below are some tips and contact information from our Guidance Counsellor, Jane Dickie, which we hope will be useful to you.

The first level of support comes from family and whanau.

  • talk and listen, ask questions, be present
  • offer extra nurturing care - comfort, your presence, food
  • when the talking and listening are done encourage distraction, doing things they enjoy
  • regular routines are important, even if they are holiday routines
  • limit time on social media, many of the posts make it more distressing and are not necessarily true
  • remove devices at sleep time. Sleep is most important
  • supervise your young person and know where they are
  • if young people are congregating have a parent present
  • share phone numbers with other parents so you can stay in touch
  • most importantly young people need your presence at times like this even though they will say their friends are their best support.
