The School - Special Character

Marian College is a Roman Catholic school. Up to five per cent of the roll may be students of other denominations and religions. While the religious life and teaching of the college are Catholic, and all must participate, sensitivity is shown to a broad religious spectrum.

Our special character is defined in terms of the school being a Catholic school which exercises the right to live and teach the values of Jesus Christ.

  Chapel

Our particular flavour is that of the Mercy and Josephite traditions. Our traditions and Christian, Mercy and Josephite principles must be maintained, valued and supported by all who join the college community. The staff of the college share the educative role with the parents, the first educators. The religious beliefs, practices and the values that have been laid down in the home are built upon at our school. Marian College values its educational partnership with parents and the promotion of shared Gospel values.

Chapel assemblies are held for each house and students are encouraged to participate in a variety of creative liturgies. Classes celebrate Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and attend retreats. A special character committee participates actively in organising liturgies, in consultation with the pastoral chaplain and the director of religious studies.

Marian is served by two part-time chaplains, a sacramental chaplain who presides at Mass and other sacraments, and a pastoral chaplain who provides care and spiritual support for students. They, together with the principal, director of religious studies and the staff within the religious education department, maintain the general religious life of the college.

Religious education as a subject, remains an integral part of the curriculum and is compulsory at every level. Full involvement in all aspects of the religious education programme and special character life of the school is a condition of enrolment.

Marian College encourages students to play a full part in their local parish community.
