The School - Pastoral Care

Pastoral care system
The size of the college encourages the formation of a close and friendly atmosphere. We value the parent/school partnership in educating the young people in our care. The staff strive to create the right climate which is at the same time orderly and conducive to effective learning in the development of personal responsibility and autonomy in each student. In this context we expect students to conform to our standards and expectations at all times. This is especially the case when they are involved in activities directly related to the college and also includes acting responsibly out of school.

houses blank Marian College has a guidance approach to students in their behaviour. Respect for self and respect for others are the basic guidelines emphasized within the college. We seek to support each student individually. In some areas of discipline as a consequence punishment will be given according to the misbehaviour. We seek to identify the reasons why a student is under stress and to assist in bringing about any necessary change of behaviour. Any student who does not respond to this assistance will as a result be given punishment according to the offence.

The deputy principal, assistant principal, guidance counsellor, deans, pastoral chaplain and house group teachers make up the pastoral team at the college. The house group teachers are responsible for the pastoral care, administrative affairs and discipline of the pupils in their house group. The deans take a particular interest in the general development and progress of students at their year level. Parents should feel free to contact subject teachers through the head of department regarding progress in studies and the house group teacher, dean or guidance counsellor for pastoral matters. The pastoral chaplain may also be contacted.

This communication process is generally recommended before seeking the advice or support of senior staff.

The guidance counsellor is available to students and their families to discuss, confidentially, issues which may be of concern to them.
