In developing the whole person, Marian College offers a rich co-curricular programme. The cultural opportunities are especially varied with a wide variety of instrumental music, in addition to choir, debating, public speaking and theatre sports. Our Maori culture group is an integral part of the life of the college, as is the Pacific group.

Marian has a rich sporting tradition with a wide range of activities being available, including basketball, hockey, netball, soccer and tennis.

Curriculum today carries our girls far and wide into the community and involves many groups and speakers visiting the school. Rotary and other exchange students are with us for longer periods of up to a year.

A treaty of international friendship has been established with Toho Senior High School in Nagoya, Japan. Through the japanese language programme biennial class trips to Japan are organised. At the senior level students are invited to study at Toho High School for a year within a twin exchange programme. Marian sends a student to Toho and Toho sends a japanese student to study at Marian and live with the family of the New Zealand student. Students who are able to take up this initiative return to this country fluent in oral japanese and with an understanding of the japanese culture.

At the senior level speakers are a feature of our religious education programme, particularly in social education and service to the community. Groups and cultural parties visit at times to perform for our school assembly, cultural exchanges that are very popular.

Community service is a feature of school life as part of the religious education programme. Girls go into the local area for a specific period to meet with and help a wide variety of organisations and individuals. A few students gain some measure of recognition for their work through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Outdoor education is a feature of our programmes in the junior school. The aims include acquiring social skills, gaining knowledge, building confidence, increasing understanding and developing the basic skills to survive in our high country. It is a challenging programme that adds a dimension to the full educational experiences that cannot be found in a city situation. Marian girls rise to the challenge with enthusiasm and determination and a strong close spirit is maintained.
