Music,
drama, debating, public speaking
All students at Marian are encouraged to be involved in the cultural life of the college. There are a number of performance opportunities within the college as well as in the wider community. The Marian - St Bede’s musical production also allows a large number of years 11, 12 and 13 students to show their talents on the stage.
Enthusiasm, talent and interest are all important in the musical life of the College. Groups such as the various choirs and instrumental groups offer performance opportunities for a large number of musicians. Under the itinerant music teachers’ scheme there are lessons available for voice and for a number of instruments; these places are always keenly sought.
One of the highlights of the cultural year is the Bishop Lyons competition held with the other
Catholic schools in the diocese. Regular interschool debates give students plenty of opportunities to develop their speaking and debating skills.
Culture
groups
Both Maori and Pacific culture groups operate in the college. Although students with Maori and Pacific heritage are a small percentage of all students they are encouraged to celebrate their cultural heritage and to incorporate it into their daily lives. Recently an Indian dance group has performed and a Filipino group is emerging.
Weekly
practices are scheduled, with opportunities for the groups
to participate with other secondary school culture clubs in
the local area. |
